Every visitor asks some version of this question in the first hour after landing: "How do I actually get around this city?" Vizag isn't small — it stretches over 35 km along the coast, from the port area near Yarada up to Bheemunipatnam in the north — so the answer matters more here than in a compact city where everything is walkable.
We rent bikes for a living, so we're obviously not a neutral party here. But we've watched enough tourists try all three options that we can give you an honest, specific breakdown rather than a sales pitch. We're comparing the three realistic ways to get around: app cabs (Ola/Uber), bike taxis (mainly Rapido here), and a self-drive rental like ours.
To make this a fair comparison instead of a vague one, we priced out a typical first-time visitor's 3 days in Vizag:
That's a realistic pattern for most visitors — not extreme, not minimal.
Ola and Uber both operate in Vizag, but this isn't Bangalore or Hyderabad — availability is noticeably thinner, especially outside the main city core (Dwaraka Nagar, Siripuram, MVP Colony) and later in the evening. Expect longer wait times than you're used to in a metro city, and real surge pricing during peak hours or rain.
Rough per-trip costs for the short city hops in our test case typically land somewhere in the ₹80–₹180 range each, depending on distance and demand — we're not going to pretend we have live fare data, since pricing shifts with surge, but that's a realistic band based on what we hear from guests. For 9-10 short trips over 3 days, plus one longer Bheemunipatnam round trip (likely ₹500+ each way given the distance), you're realistically looking at ₹2,000–₹3,500 total for the trip — and that's assuming cars are actually available when you need one, which isn't guaranteed.
The real limitation isn't price — it's control. You can't ask an app cab to wait 20 minutes at a viewpoint while you take photos, and every single stop is a new booking, a new wait, and a new fare.
Rapido bike taxis are generally the cheapest per-trip option — often ₹40–₹100 for a short city hop, since you're paying for a bike ride, not a car. For solo travelers doing pure point-to-point trips, this can work out cheaper than app cabs for the short city-hop days.
But a bike taxi breaks down for two parts of our test case. First, it only works for one person — if you're traveling as a couple or a small group, you need multiple bike taxis booked separately, which erases the cost advantage fast. Second, a 50 km round trip to Bheemunipatnam on a pillion seat, on someone else's bike, at their pace, for over two hours each way, is a genuinely different (and less comfortable) experience than riding it yourself on a bike you've chosen.
This is where we can give you exact numbers, because it's our own pricing. A Honda Activa or similar scooter for 3 days on our daily rate is ₹498/day × 3 = ₹1,494, with 120 km/day included — more than enough for the itinerary above, including the Bheemunipatnam round trip. Add a helmet (already included free) and fuel (roughly ₹300-400 total for 3 days of city + coastal riding on a scooter).
All-in for 3 days: roughly ₹1,800-1,900 — cheaper than the app-cab estimate above, and with zero waiting, zero surge pricing, and the freedom to stop wherever you want for as long as you want. If you're traveling as a couple, the math gets even more lopsided in the rental's favor, since one scooter covers two people at no extra cost — versus needing two separate bike taxis or a car for every single trip.
To be fair about it — if you're only in Vizag for a few hours between a train and a flight, with one or two stops total, an app cab or bike taxi is genuinely simpler. You don't need to worry about parking, fuel, or riding in unfamiliar traffic. The economics only tip toward renting once you're staying multiple days or making more than a handful of stops — which, realistically, is most visitors.
| Option | 3-Day Estimate | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| App Cabs | ₹2,000–₹3,500 | A few hours, no riding experience needed |
| Bike Taxi | ₹1,200–₹2,000 (solo only) | Solo travelers, short point-to-point hops |
| Self-Drive Rental | ~₹1,800-1,900 (covers 2 people) | Multi-day visits, couples, flexible plans |
