Araku Valley by Bike — When to Go and What to Expect Each Season

Araku Valley is around 120 km from Vizag and the ride there — through the Eastern Ghats on the Vizag-Araku highway — is genuinely one of the best motorcycle routes in Andhra Pradesh. Tight curves, deep valleys, and dense forest on both sides. The destination is worth it too — coffee plantations, tribal culture, and a climate that feels nothing like the coast.

But the experience changes significantly depending on when you go. Here's an honest breakdown of each season.

October to February — The Best Time, No Contest

This is peak season for a reason. Temperatures in Araku drop to around 10-15°C at night and stay comfortably cool during the day. The roads are dry and in good condition. The skies are clear and the views from the ghat sections are at their sharpest. If you're doing Araku for the first time, go between November and January.

One thing to keep in mind — this is also when the valley is most crowded. Weekends especially can get busy. Leave Vizag early (by 6 AM) and you'll have the roads mostly to yourself.

March to May — Still Good, But Warm

The temperature starts climbing in March and by May it's genuinely hot on the Vizag side. Araku itself stays cooler because of the altitude, but the ride through the ghats in the afternoon can be uncomfortable. If you go during this period, plan to start early — leave Vizag by 5:30-6 AM, reach Araku before the heat sets in, and head back by 3-4 PM. The roads are still good and the crowds have thinned out after peak season.

June to September — Only for the Experienced Rider

Monsoon in the Eastern Ghats is beautiful to look at — waterfalls everywhere, intense green, mist over the hills. But it also means wet roads, reduced visibility, and occasional landslides on the ghat sections. This isn't a route for beginners in the rain. If you're an experienced rider who's comfortable on wet roads and knows how to handle curves in low visibility, it can be a memorable trip. But go with caution and check road conditions before you leave. We generally advise customers to avoid the ghat sections during heavy rain.

What Bike to Take

For Araku, a 150cc+ motorcycle is the right call. The ghat section has long climbs and you want a bike with enough power to handle them without straining. Scooters can technically make the trip, but they'll struggle on the steeper sections and the ride will be more tiring than it needs to be. At Ever Green Travels, we have 150cc and above motorcycles ideal for this route. For riders who want the full experience, our Royal Enfield rentals in Vizag are specifically suited to the ghats — just tell us you're heading to Araku when you book.

It's just 35 km further along the same highway — read our Vizag to Borra Caves guide to combine both in one day. Check our fleet for the right bike for this trip.
