Vizag's monsoon season runs from roughly June through September. The city looks stunning — everything turns green, the sea gets dramatic, and waterfalls appear on routes like Araku that are barely a trickle in summer. But riding in the rain is a different skill set, and the ghat roads in particular become genuinely challenging when wet.
Here's what we tell our customers before they head out during monsoon season.
The biggest risk isn't heavy rain itself — it's the road surface. Vizag's roads, especially near the beaches and on hillside routes, develop slippery patches, loose gravel washed onto the tarmac, and occasional waterlogging in low-lying areas. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and brake progressively rather than sharply. Avoid the edges of the road where debris tends to collect.
On ghat routes like Vizag to Araku, be especially careful on curves. The tarmac stays wet for a long time even after rain stops, and visibility through the ghats can drop quickly when mist moves in.
A good two-piece rain suit is the most practical investment for monsoon riding. They're inexpensive, pack small, and keep you dry enough to ride comfortably. Waterproof gloves are worth carrying too — your grip on the handlebars matters a lot more when everything is wet. And if your helmet visor tends to fog up, use an anti-fog spray or keep the visor slightly open to maintain airflow.
This is the most important part. Some conditions are simply not worth riding through:
If there's a cyclone warning or heavy rainfall alert for the district — don't ride. If the road ahead is reported flooded — don't attempt it. If it's been raining continuously for several hours and you don't know the road condition — wait it out. If visibility has dropped to the point where you can't see 50 metres ahead — pull over and wait.
No destination is worth a serious accident. The monsoon will pass, the road will clear, and you can ride another day.
At Ever Green Travels, we pay extra attention to tyre condition, brake performance, and lights before every rental during monsoon months. We'll also tell you honestly if the route you're planning is advisable on the day. If conditions are bad, we'll say so — we'd rather have you come back another day than have you on a risky road. Not everything is off-limits. Beach Road, the coastal stretches toward Bheemili, and most city riding is perfectly manageable in light to moderate rain. The issues arise mainly on hilly and ghat routes during heavy or continuous rainfall. Use your judgement, check the forecast, and when in doubt — call us. We know these roads well and can give you an honest picture of what to expect.
