Motorcycle Maintenance Tips for Long Coastal Rides

Riding Along the Coast? Here's What to Check Before You Leave

Coastal riding is one of the best experiences Vizag has to offer — but the salt air, humidity, and occasional rough patches near the beach roads can take a toll on a bike if you're not prepared. Whether you're on your own bike or a rental bike in Vizag, a few quick checks before you head out can save you a lot of trouble on the road.

Before You Start — The Quick Check List

This takes less than 10 minutes and is genuinely worth doing:

Tyres: Check the pressure and look for any visible wear or cracks. Coastal roads can have sand and loose gravel near the edges — underinflated tyres make that much worse. For most scooters and 150cc bikes, 28-32 PSI front and 32-36 PSI rear is the standard range.

Chain: If the bike has a chain drive, check that it's properly lubricated and not too loose or too tight. A dry chain on a long ride is a headache you don't want.

Brakes: Squeeze both levers and press the rear brake pedal. They should feel firm and responsive. If either feels spongy or weak, don't ignore it.

Lights: Especially important if you're planning to ride into the evening — check that headlight, tail light, and indicators are all working.

Fuel: Top up before you leave. Fuel stations are easy to find in the city but can be sparse once you're heading toward more remote coastal stretches.

During a Multi-Day Coastal Trip

Salt air accelerates corrosion on metal parts — especially the chain, brake calipers, and any exposed bolts. If you're out for more than a day, wipe down the bike at the end of each day with a damp cloth and re-lubricate the chain. It takes five minutes and makes a real difference over three or four days.

Also keep an eye on tyre pressure. Temperature changes between morning and afternoon can affect it more than you'd expect, especially in the summer months.

After the Ride

Give the bike a wash with fresh water when you get back — pay attention to the underside, the chain, and around the wheel spokes where salt and sand tend to collect. Let it dry properly before parking it covered.

If you notice anything unusual during your ride — a sound that wasn't there before, vibration, brakes feeling different — don't wait. Get it checked before your next ride.
